Media department
The BTEC First Certificate in Media is a Level 2 qualification that is designed to provide pupils with a work-related qualification. It is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s level A* to C grade. Edexcel’s BTEC First qualifications are nationally recognised and designed to relate to the National Occupational Standards (NOS).
It is a two-year course
During the course learners will develop skills, knowledge and understanding that will prepare them for employment or further study in a media related environment. Although the range of skills developed, over the two years, are essential for working in a Media sector they are also applicable for other work situations.
The course structure
To complete the qualification it is necessary to submit one core unit plus two specialist units. Each of the units is clearly laid out with clear guidance in a series of assignments. All the learning outcomes and grading criteria are stated exactly, and made available to pupils, so they have every opportunity to achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction to a national standard.

Future job possibilities
The Media industry includes sectors in television, radio, press, music, film, interactive media, photo-imaging (including photography) advertising and marketing. These sectors vary in size from large multi-national companies to national and local businesses.
The First Certificate will encourage pupils to reflect on job roles; technical, creative, editorial, managerial, sales and marketing, administration and financial and they will be given opportunity to develop transferable skills such as reliability, punctuality, self-presentation and efficiency for further training and education.
The units
Unit 2:Research for Media Production covers a range of researching methods which underlie all media production. Pupils will be expected to identify and gather research material and then organise and present it for a specific purpose.
Unit 4: Video Production this unit introduces learners to a range of technical, creative, administrative skills needed for video production work. There will be team projects carried out alongside individual pre-production and post-production contributions. Part of this unit will result in the creation of a finished video product.
Unit 7: Advertising Production will involve being introduced to the techniques of advertising. Planning and producing ideas, as well as considering television,
